9.6 V Battery And Charger Airsoft

The venerable 9.6 Volt (v) Airsoft Electric Gun (AEG) Battery, once an essential upgrade from the 8.4v batteries of yesteryear used in Tokyo Marui AEGs, now an overlooked, underappreciated workhorse of Airsoft. For the few Airsoft Guns that come with a battery, it is more often than not a 9.6v battery nowadays. This is the most common battery in Airsoft, and for good reason too! These batteries can be had in Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad / Ni-Cd) or Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH / Ni-MH), the latter being the more popular option. These batteries come in nominal voltage increments of 1.2v per cell. The most common is 9.6v NiMH, this is because 10.8v batteries are generally fairly large to fit inside your most common Airsoft Guns. The older NiCad batteries were really large due to their lower power density than NiMH batteries. These batteries had a relatively low Milliamp-hour (mAh) capacity compared to the Ni-MH batteries of today. For example, a battery that might fit into your airsoft gun such as a MP5 SMG would have been an 8.4v 600mAh NiCd. Nowadays you would use a 9.6v NiMh with a capacity of 1600mAh. This battery would be not much larger than the older battery technology and provide you with an increased rate of fire and trigger response as well as a run time of more than double! The other NiCd batteries also suffered from a memory effect, you would need to full discharge your battery before recharging it, otherwise, the battery would develop memory and you would experience a reduced run time. The NiMH has a reduced memory effect and you do not have to full discharge the battery before recharging it. However, this is to a lesser degree. It is still a good idea to fully discharge your NiMH battery every so often and then fully recharge it to combat the memory effect.

Today no one really uses the NiCd batteries and the NiMh reigns supreme in the common Airsoft battery. The most popular battery is the 9.6v 1600mAh NiMh nun-chuck battery. This battery fits a majority of airsoft guns. It uses a small Tamiya connector, if your Airsoft gun uses a Large Tamiya connector, you can use a battery adapter to convert it over to a smaller plug, which almost all Airsoft batteries use nowadays, or you can even change the connector on your Airsoft Gun to a smaller connector. Another option is to convert your Airsoft Gun, Battery, and Charger to a T-Plug connector. These have a lower resistance, which will increase your Airsoft Guns electrical efficiency which will improve your trigger response and rate of fire slightly! It is also rated to a much higher Amperage (A), typically 60A! Besides upgrading your battery, the upgraded Connector are the two most popular Airsoft Gun upgrades, and they are probably the best bang for your buck as well. It’s not just the performance gain you will see, it’s the increased reliability in regards to having a good, reliable electrical connection. This will reduce one more annoyance while playing a game on an Airsoft Field.
